LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Despite another blistering day of offense led by a career performance from
Casey Sorg, the Bellarmine University baseball team fell 17-13 to Jacksonville on Sunday in an Atlantic Sun Conference series finale at Knights Field.
For the second straight game, Bellarmine (1-22, 0-6 ASUN) set multiple season highs offensively before being turned back by Jacksonville (11-12, 5-1), which again flexed its own muscle with the bat. The Knights' 20 hits (tied for second most in the Division-I era), 13 RBI and four stolen bases were their best marks of the season.
Sorg had a colossal outing at the plate. The junior right fielder set a new D1-era record by smashing three home runs, his five runs scored tied the top D1-era mark (
Reed Blaszczyk vs. Queens, 2023) and his six RBI were one shy of the D1-era high (Matt Higgins vs. North Alabama, 2022).
Sorg launched a solo homer in the second, a two-run shot in the fourth and a three-run blast in the seventh. He even added a double for good measure in producing four extra-base hits. His long-ball total rose to six on the season.
Sorg's three-run missile in the seventh vaulted Bellarmine to a 12-11 lead. However, Jacksonville answered with a six-run eighth that pushed the Dolphins to a series sweep. JU had 15 hits, with Cade Hentz going 4-for-4 with five RBI.
Blaszczyk, sophomore third baseman
Brady Morse and sophomore catcher
Charlie Rife registered three hits apiece for Bellarmine while senior center fielder
Will Aubel, junior second baseman
Andres Castro and sophomore shortstop
Luke Scales collected two each.
Blaszczyk lofted a sacrifice fly, Scales had an RBI triple and junior designated hitter
Matt Flaherty punched an RBI single in Bellarmine's three-run first. Morse ripped an RBI double in the fourth as the Knights led 7-6.
Aubel had an RBI single as part of BU's four-run seventh, and Castro added a sacrifice fly in the eighth, which turned out to be the last inning due to reaching the time limit that was in place to accommodate Jacksonville's travel schedule (no new inning could start after 3 p.m.; first pitch was at 12:05 p.m.).
Freshman left-hander
Carson Brower tossed a pair of scoreless innings and senior left-hander
Steven Thom fired a shutout frame. Sophomore right-hander
Holden Groher retired both batters he faced.
Bellarmine will play at 4 p.m. (ET) Tuesday at Morehead State.
