Knights’ fourth-quarter rally comes up short against Davidson

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Bellarmine field hockey team saw a late fourth quarter surge come up just short on a Sunday afternoon, falling 2-1 to Davidson after a late tiebreaking goal by the Wildcats.

Davidson's Eva van der Kooi scored the first goal of the contest 3:13 into the second quarter after a scoreless first period. A potential second goal by Davidson in the second quarter was disallowed.

The Knights (2-6, 0-1 MAC) would not get on the board until the fourth quarter when freshman Sammie Callaghan knocked in her first career goal just over a minute in to tie the game at 1. Callaghan was assisted by senior Bente Moormann.

Davidson (4-4, 0-2 A10), however, retook the lead for good with just under 10 minutes to go on a score by Sarah Grace Clifton to make it the eventual 2-1 final.

The Knights had a total of six shots, two of which reached the Davidson cage, while the Wildcats racked up 16 total shots, five of those towards the Bellarmine cage. The two teams were just about even on penalty corners, Bellarmine with four and Davidson with five.

The Knights' Kailey Workman also had a busy afternoon, making 3 saves on 16 shots faced. Sophomore defender Skylar Sokal also recorded a pair of defensive saves.

Bellarmine will not have to wait long to get back in action. The Knights will meet Appalachian State Monday at noon ET in Davidson in a makeup of Friday's postponed contest that was affected by Hurricane Helene in Boone.
