LOUISVILLE, Ky. — In his wildest dreams,
Tim Chastonay could not have envisioned a better send-off in his final regular-season game at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
Five different Knights found the net as the Bellarmine University men's soccer team punched its ticket to the ASUN Championship with a 5-2 triumph over Central Arkansas on Saturday night in Atlantic Sun Conference action.
Winner of three straight, Bellarmine (8-3-2, 3-1 ASUN) seized control of the ASUN Gold Division after knocking off previous division leader Central Arkansas (3-8-2, 2-1-1). In the process, the Knights earned their sixth straight berth in the ASUN Championship since elevating to Division I, doing so on Senior Night.
If that wasn't enough, Bellarmine shed the monkey off its back after beating Central Arkansas for the first time in the D1 era. The Knights entered 0-5-2 against the Bears. BU also set a new D1-era record with its eighth win while keeping its perfect home record in 2025 intact, moving to 6-0 in Frazier Stadium.
There was simply no denying an inspired Bellarmine squad of these ample achievements in the last regular-season home contest of Chastonay's storied 28-year career. He is retiring from college coaching at the end of this season and will remain at the university as the senior associate AD.
Sophomore forward
Johan Nissen-Lie scored less than three minutes into the contest, and Bellarmine was off and running. The Knights tacked on two more goals before halftime and continued humming in the second half, answering with two more goals after UCA had gotten on the board. The five goals, six assists and 15 shots on goal in the game are new program records for an ASUN match, while BU's 30 total shots are a new overall record in the D1 era.
Bellarmine was helped by a Central Arkansas red card in the 27th minute, but the Knights were already leading 2-0 by that point and, as much as anything, the infraction was a barrier for the Bears to slow down BU's overwhelming momentum.
In the third minute, redshirt junior defender
Jeffrey Cox launched a thunderous clear practically from box to box. Nissen-Lie tracked it down and slotted a shot from near the 6 under the goalkeeper and into the net for a quick 1-0 lead on his eighth goal of the season.
Bellarmine continued to attack relentlessly and went up 2-0 in the 19th minute. Redshirt senior midfielder
Brendan Schoemehl spotted redshirt junior midfielder
Alex Halevy at the top corner of the box, and Halevy connected with sophomore midfielder
Nick Harshaw inside the 6 leading to his fourth goal of the year.
After UCA's red card, Bellarmine added its third goal of the first half. In the 41st minute, senior midfielder
Collin Folds converted off a cross from redshirt junior midfielder
Colin Mackey. It was the first career goal for Folds, who was among the seniors honored on the night.
Central Arkansas did strike first after the break, scoring off a corner kick in the 58th minute. However, Bellarmine answered in the 70th minute, as Mackey's service on a free kick threaded through traffic untouched and landed inside the back post for his second goal of the year.
Redshirt senior midfielder
Jackson Marks — yet another Knight playing his final regular-season home game — capped Bellarmine's scoring in the 76th minute on his second goal of the season. It came off a combination of passes from Mackey and Harshaw.
Bellarmine finished with a commanding 30-5 advantage in shots, including 15-3 on frame. Both of UCA's goals came off corner kicks — the Bears added a second in the 85th minute.
Bellarmine concludes the regular season with two road games, the initial set for 8 p.m. (ET) Saturday at Lipscomb.
