AMHERST, Mass. -- Bellarmine Knights Field Hockey was defeated 5-0 on the road by the 16th-ranked UMass Minutewomen on Friday afternoon. With the outcome, the Knights drop to 2-14 overall and 2-6 in Mid-American Conference action on the season.
UMass got on the board just a minute and a half into the contest, finding the back of the net off of a rebound from an initial
Kailey Workman save. The Minutewomen recorded five more shots and two penalty corners in the period, but Workman was able to prevent further damage going into the second quarter. UMass extended their lead to 3-0 off of two more penalty corners in the second period. The Knights appeared to have a penalty corner opportunity of their own with just under five minutes to go in the period, but the initial call was overturned upon video review and neither team was able to score again prior to halftime.
Two more goals from two more penalty corners by the Minutewomen in the third quarter made it 5-0. With just under eight minutes to play in the fourth quarter, Bellarmine was awarded a quick series of penalty corners which led to two shots from
Luna Tuncay, but did not result in a goal. The Knights were able to hold UMass without a shot for the entire fourth quarter to keep the final margin at five.
Tuncay's recorded the only two shots of the day for the Knights, as Bellarmine was outshot 21-2 overall and 14-2 in shots on goal. UMass also held an 8-3 advantage in penalty corners.
The Knights will wrap up their northeast road trip on Sunday at 12 PM, when they travel to Smithfield, RI to take on the Bryant Bulldogs in their final true road game of the season.
