JACKSONVILLE, Fl. – The Bellarmine men's tennis senior duo of
Vineet Ramesh and
Matthew Nice earned a second-place finish in the Doubles Main Draw at the Conference Individual Tournament last week held at North Florida's UNF Tennis Complex.
Freshmen
Ryan Parkins and
Sebastian Baumann also competed in the event as a doubles pairing while all four played in the singles bracket as well.
Ramesh and Nice began their run with a 6-3 win over Abilene Christian's Luis Jose Nakamine and Ethan Scribner. Next, they took down UNF's Enrique Pena and Andreas Scott, the No. 1 seed in the event, to move on to the semifinals where they defeated EKU's Joao Barreto and Fernando Bulnes Garrorena to advance to the finals. In the last match, Ramesh and Nice faced off against a Alberto Altur and Izan Orgiles, a tough pairing from North Alabama, and took their first loss, falling 6-2, 7-5. Entering the tournament, Ramesh and Nice were ranked 80
th in the national doubles rankings.
Parkins and Baumann lost their opening round matchup 6-1 to Nuno Pinheiro and Marek Nano of EKU. They were awarded a walkover win in their first consolation match before falling a second time to go 1-2 in the event.
In singles, Nice tallied the lone Bellarmine win. After battling with the No. 2 seeded Hugo Magnussson out of FGCU to a 4-6, 6-4, 5-10 loss in super tiebreak, Nice bounced back with a 6-7, 6-3, 10-7 victory over Stetson's Mihnea Maftei before he had to withdraw from singles play due to an elbow injury. Ramesh also faced a first round loss and was forced to withdraw from competition with a shoulder injury. Parkins and Baumann were placed in the single's qualifying bracket and both suffered first round defeats.
Up next, Bellarmine will conclude its fall schedule with its final event, traveling to Toledo, OH for the Toledo Invite November 14-16.
