JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — After a near-decade reign, the king has finally been dethroned.
On Friday morning at Cecil Field, redshirt junior
Alex Hooten broke the Bellarmine University men's cross country team's longstanding 8k program record while earning All-ASUN accolades in the process at the ASUN Championship.
Hooten clocked a 23:56.1, which bested the previous 8k program record of 23:59.04 held by Chris Striegel from the 2016 Greater Louisville Classic. Hooten supplanted at the top of the chart the most decorated harrier in men's program history, as Striegel is a Bellarmine Athletics Hall of Famer who was a three-time D2 All-American.
Hooten became the third member of the men's program to garner All-ASUN laurels. He landed on the third team after placing 20th behind his fourth all-time top 12 performance in the 8k of the season. Hooten now owns seven of the program's all-time top 50 marks.
Bellarmine's men had three performances that ranked in its top 50 all-time. In addition to Hooten, junior
Chase Austin tied for the 26th-fastest 8k ever (24:44.6) while placing 33rd, and sophomore
Salah Farah recorded the 48th-best time in program history (24:54.6) while placing 35th.
Hooten ascended to the top spot on the men's 8k performance list from fifth. Austin burst into ninth and Farah into 12th. Freshman
Jared Fairbanks added to a banner morning by cracking the list at No. 17 after posting a 24:59.4 while placing 42nd at the meet.
Landen Fernandez, another freshman, completed the Knights top five in 58th (25:33.7).
In
Emma Petersen's first season as Bellarmine's director of XC/TF, the Knights men placed sixth (158) of 12, the fifth straight season in which they've finished in the upper half of the ASUN.
Senior
Sierra Oesterling recorded her eighth all-time top 50 mark in the women's 5k after placing a team-best 36th in 17:55.0, which is tied for the 16th-best mark in program history. The top-three times of Oesterling's career have come over the last three ASUN meets.
Sophomore
Ginger Atzinger (79th, 19:38.9) followed Oesterling while senior
Sarah Jacob (81st, 19:44.9), redshirt senior
Ellerie Heinzmann (83rd, 19:47.9) and junior
Molly Moore (85th, 19:50.7) rounded out the Knights top five.
Lipscomb's women and Eastern Kentucky's men both won their fourth straight ASUN titles.
Bellarmine will compete in the NCAA Southeast Regional Championship on Nov. 14 at Panorama Farms in Earlysville, Virginia.
