JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A historic season was followed by a historic postseason awards haul.
The Bellarmine University men's soccer team earned a treasure chest's worth of Atlantic Sun Conference laurels, including ASUN Coach of the Year plaudits for
Tim Chastonay and ASUN co-Player of the Year accolades for sophomore forward
Johan Nissen-Lie.
In addition, the Knights reaped a Division I-era program-record six All-ASUN Team citations, including an overall program-record five first-team all-conference selections, which bested the previous mark of four first-team All-GLVC performers from the NCAA II Sweet 16 squad. BU also had six players acknowledged on the Academic All-ASUN Team.
In his 28th and final season at Bellarmine, Chastonay was named ASUN Coach of the Year for the second time in six years in the league. He was also recognized in Bellarmine's first season in D1, the spring of 2021, when the fall campaign was pushed back due to the pandemic. Nissen-Lie has made program history by becoming its first-ever ASUN Player of the Year.
The ASUN Player of the Year honor is an offensive-oriented prize. Bellarmine has had two other players earn ASUN superlative awards in Matthew Brozovich (ASUN Goalkeeper of the Year) and Brock Pope (ASUN Defensive Player of the Year), both in 2023.
Nissen-Lie was a unanimous first-team All-ASUN selection. Redshirt senior midfielder
Brendan Schoemehl, sophomore midfielder
Nick Harshaw, redshirt junior defender
Jeffrey Cox and senior defender
Rhys Davies all joined him on the first team. Redshirt senior goalkeeper
Peter Van Euwen garnered second-team recognition.
Schoemehl, Cox, Davies, Van Euwen, redshirt senior midfielder
Jackson Marks and redshirt junior midfielder
Tate McCrery were Academic All-ASUN Team recipients.
Despite a bevy of key returners and a track record of never missing the ASUN Tournament, Bellarmine was picked to finish last in the conference in the ASUN preseason coaches' poll. The Chastonay-led Knights nuked that projection, becoming the first team in the league to secure an ASUN Tournament berth before capturing the Gold Division title and advancing to the finals of the conference tournament. In addition, his sublime swan song included a D1-era program-record eight wins.
Nissen-Lie and North Florida's Anton Khelil shared ASUN Player of the Year honors. Nissen-Lie is the conference leader in goals (10), points (20), shots (49) and shots on goal (22), all of which are D1-era program records. The native of Asker, Norway, found the net in three of the team's six ASUN matches and added another in the ASUN title game. He earned an ASUN Player of the Week accolade and was named to the ASUN All-Tournament Team.
Schoemehl garnered first-team All-ASUN laurels for the second time in his career. The holding midfielder was acknowledged as ASUN co-Player of the Week and on Top Drawer Soccer's Team of the Week after a two-goal performance in a win over Lipscomb. The native of St. Louis distributed four assists on the year.
Davies was picked for the first team after being a Preseason All-ASUN Team selection. The native of Waipu, New Zealand, scored in both games in the postseason en route to ASUN All-Tournament Team notice and had an ASUN Defensive Player of the Week accolade this season. Playing wherever needed on the back line, he led the team in minutes among non-goalkeepers with 1,456 and accumulated three goals and one assist.
Cox was an ASUN All-Freshman Team selection two years ago and received first-team All-ASUN praise this season. The center back followed Davies in minutes among non-goalkeepers with 1,397 and played the full match in all but one appearance. The Louisville native distributed three assists on the season, two of which came in ASUN action.
Harshaw was a unanimous ASUN All-Freshman Team honoree last season and reaped first-team All-ASUN recognition this year. The attacking midfielder is tied for second in the conference in points (13) and tied for third in assists (five). Two of his four goals came in ASUN play, as did three of his helpers.
A second-team All-ASUN recipient, Van Euwen earned eight wins and four clean sheets while being involved in one additional shutout in goal for the Knights. The native of Avon Lake, Ohio, posted a 1.09 goals-against average, .743 save percentage and 52 total saves. He notched an ASUN Goalkeeper of the Week award this season.
Bellarmine earned the maximum six Academic All-ASUN Team plaudits. Some of the primary parameters for the award are a minimum 3.50 GPA, at least four semesters completed at the institution (for undergraduates) and participation in at least half of the team's games. Nods went to Cox (history), Davies (political science), Marks (exercise science), McCrery (business administration), Schoemehl (psychology) and Van Euwen (MBA).
