No. 23 Cardinals top women's basketball in MTE finale

Reid and Walz, former player and coach, reunite as coaches

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville on Sunday performed like it did in the Monique Reid days, and that's going to pose an insurmountable challenge for most opponents of the Cardinals.

On the third and final day of the Louisville MTE, the No. 23 Cardinals had four players score in double figures and four more who came close in a 100-37 win over the Bellarmine University women's basketball team at the KFC Yum! Center.

Bellarmine (2-7) was certainly going to have its hands full no matter what against Louisville (7-2), but the Knights again finished a contest with seven players due to their dreadful rash of injuries, the severity of which Reid noted she experienced as a player during one of her years with the Cardinals.

Reid played under current Louisville coach Jeff Walz from 2008-13 and had a storied career that included two Final Fours, 1,725 points and immortality as a U of L Athletics Hall of Famer. The two head coaches chat regularly and shared warm pre- and post-game embraces.

Louisville was the Louisville the Knights have known in the D1 era — the Cardinals have been nationally ranked in four of the five meetings and are perennially coming off an NCAA Tournament campaign when BU takes the floor with them. In the latest matchup, U of L started fast and went on to shoot 51.4 percent for the game.

Bellarmine had some nice moments in the second half. Sophomore forward Rachel Shropshire, who led the Knights with 10 points, canned a trio of 3-pointers in the third quarter, including a buzzer-beater at the end of the period.

Sophomore guard Ava Smith converted a strong drive to the basket and soon followed with an emphatic block in transition defense. Junior guard/forward Rose Jamison had a savvy scoop shot while finishing in the paint against the Cardinals' towering interior.

Bellarmine's schedule does not let up. The Knights will play at 7 p.m. ET (6 CT) Tuesday at Illinois.
