DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Bellarmine cheer team last weekend competed at the National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) College Nationals.
"I'm super proud of our student-athletes," said Bellarmine cheerleading coach
Houston Wood. "They had to overcome a lot of adversity this season with it being my first year as head coach and getting our routine later than usual."
The Knights placed 14
th out of 28 teams in Intermediate All Girl Division I, the largest division in the competition. They registered an event score of 87.96.
"Our cheerleaders left it all on the mat," Wood said. "Finishing in the top half of our division is a huge win for the program."
In addition to the late start this season, the team also suffered a late injury that would have made them ineligible to compete. Still, a fill-in was added to the roster and learned the routine within a week.
Competing for the Knights were juniors Britney Eisenbeck,
Jessica Heberlein,
Veronica Miller,
Lanie Scharlow and
Isabella Slayton; sophomore
Ashlyn Burkett; and freshmen
Sylvia Bohn,
Laura Cotton,
Lilly Gautraud,
Nicolette Luna and
Peytience McMillen.
