LOUISVILLE, Ky. –
Toby Platt made his head coaching debut Friday night at Trager Stadium, but the occasion was spoiled by Saint Francis, who walked out of Trager Stadium with a season-opening 4-0 win over the field hockey Knights.
Despite the outcome, Friday's game did not come without a notable career mark being reached. Senior keeper
Kailey Workman totaled 11 saves to give her 262 in her career, moving her past Breanna McWhorter (260) for the most by a Knight in the program's Division I era (since 2020).
Despite Workman's effort, the Red Flash held a 6-1 advantage in penalty corners, helping them generate 11 more shots and a scoring output that the Knights offense was unable to match.
Saint Francis opened the scoring with 10:40 left in the second on a penalty stroke by Brooklyn Widdess after her initial shot on a penalty corner was stopped by the body of a Bellarmine defender.
The Red Flash added to their advantage with 4:35 remaining in the third when Sofia Marciano found the back of the cage during a penalty corner with the help of assists from Madison Waldspurger and T Ciaccia. SFU added another score just 3:27 later by Morgan Smeltz with an assist by Emilee Myers.
The Red Flash would add one final goal by Grace Reed on a penalty corner with just under four minutes remaining off an assist by Kylee Hager.
Cami Paris was responsible for half of Bellarmine's shots in her collegiate debut while
Brooke Buchanan,
Alicia Hudson and
Mia Booth all landed single shots on goal.
Bellarmine returns to action Sunday morning at 10 a.m. ET against UC Davis at Trager Stadium.
