LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Bellarmine University field hockey team dropped a 5-1 decision to Davidson on Sunday afternoon at Trager Stadium.
Davidson (3-3) used a barrage of third-quarter goals to pull away from Bellarmine (0-6). Overall, the Wildcats outshot the Knights 20-3 and held a 7-2 advantage in penalty corners.
Davidson got the scoring started about five minutes before halftime. Moments after
Kailey Workman made a tremendous kick save after a shot by Sib Naaktgeboren on a fast break from the right side, the Wildcats earned a penalty corner and successfully converted. A pass by Naaktgeboren was deflected up and in by freshman Louisville Sacred Heart product Emilia Ostos for her first career goal.
The Wildcats outshot the Knights 8-1 and held a 5-0 advantage in corners in the first half, though the margin remained a slim 1-0 at the break.
Naaktgeboren would ignite the Wildcats' offense shortly after halftime, netting her seventh goal of the season on a give-and-go fast break less than four minutes into the third. Driving down the middle, she passed the ball off to Lourdes Wolf and proceeded to head towards the goal before getting the feed back from Wolf and beating Workman on the left side.
The junior would then make it 3-0 just over two minutes later to earn her third multi-goal game of the year. It was a top-shelf putback after a shot by Ava Mickel was saved by Workman.
The lead increased to 4-0 with 1:09 left in the third when sophomore Hallie Slidell netted her first career goal after a between-the-legs feed by senior Sarah Grace Clifton. It was Clifton's first assist since her sophomore season.
Mickel would then add a fifth goal for the Wildcats with 7:44 remaining on a penalty corner after a shot by Matilda Collins was saved and caromed her way.
Bellarmine did not have their first penalty corner until there was 2:09 left in the game and would finally dent the scoreboard with 21 seconds left on their second penalty corner. After the insertion by
Brooke Buchanan,
Anouk Richters' pass to freshman
Cami Paris was deflected up and in for the Buenos Aires native's first career goal.
Bellarmine returns to action in their Mid-American Conference opener Friday at Miami (OH) at 1 p.m. ET.
