Knights’ 4-game winning streak in Battle of the Bourbon Barrel snapped by Midway

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Bellarmine University sprint football team dropped their first game of the season Saturday at Page Stadium. Midway earned their first win in the series against the Knights, 50-0.

With the victory, the Eagles became the first team to shut out Bellarmine in the four-year history of the MSFL and laid their first claim to the Battle of the Bourbon Barrel rivalry trophy. The loss dropped the Knights to 4-1 all-time against their in-state foe.

Quarterback Dylan Morris did not see the same success against Midway that he did in the opener at Oakland City a week ago. The freshman threw interceptions on three straight possessions in the first half and completed just 4 of 9 passes for 46 yards one game after going 14-for-18 for 168 yards and two scores.

To make matters worse for the Knights, top receiver Tyler Smith left the game with an injury during an interception return by Midway in the first quarter and did not return. He finished his day with three receptions for 50 yards.

Running back/wide receiver Monterius Lee would come in at quarterback for a series following Morris' third pick, taking a few direct snaps. He would then split the QB duties the following series with Vernon Duncan, who is usually seen at defensive back. Lee would not throw any passes and netted 12 yards on the ground while Duncan finished the game completing 3 of 8 passes for 25 yards and an interception. Freshmen Max Gibbs and Delshawn Hatchett also saw time at quarterback, but neither attempted a pass.

In all, the Knights committed seven turnovers.

The Eagles reached the endzone on each of their first two possessions, including a 65-yard touchdown on a bomb from quarterback Christian Carter to Quincy Barber, en route to building a 43-0 halftime lead.

Carter finished his day completing 13 of 16 passes for 253 yards and three touchdowns. Backup Tanner Clark would add one more score, a 41-yard strike to Tray Murrell in the fourth quarter. Ayden Bauwens led the receiving corps with five grabs for 100 yards, though he did not reach the end zone. Charley Adams and Chase Williams also had touchdown receptions in addition to Barber and Murrell. Overall, the Eagles accumulated 318 yards through the air and 135 on the ground.

Despite the lopsided score, there was one bright spot for the Knights on defense. Freshman Da'coldus Fields recorded his first career interception.

Bellarmine will look to bounce back next Saturday against Calumet. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Due to a scheduling conflict at St. Xavier, the game will be held at Holy Cross High School.
