LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Bellarmine University sprint football squad is set to host Calumet College of St. Joseph Saturday night at Holy Cross High School. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET and admission is free as part of Bellarmine's Family Weekend.
Bellarmine (1-1) will be playing their first home game away from Page Stadium in their four-year history due to a scheduling conflict at St. Xavier.
About the Crimson Wave
Calumet (2-0) has opened its season strongly, shutting out Quincy 18-0 and running past Oakland City 57-7, the most points in their history. Running back Kaydarious Jones has led the way for the Crimson Wave's offense, averaging 87.5 yards in the ground through two games. Fellow junior back Jamall Warnell has found the end zone twice while rushing for 35.0 yards per game. Junior quarterback Destry Peoples has completed just 11 of 23 passes (47.8%) for 185 yards, though three of those throws have gone for scores. Sophomore signal caller Zayne Guthrie has completed all four of his passes, including a 40-yard touchdown to senior Nino Barbosa. Barbosa, still listed as a quarterback on the roster after calling the signals the past two seasons, leads the team with six catches for 120 receiving yards and two scores. One-hundred and four of those yards came last time out against OCU, a game in which he also hauled in a 43-yard score from Peoples in addition to bringing in Guthrie's lone touchdown.
On special teams, kicker Jeau Vinatieri, nephew of four-time Super Bowl champion Adam Vinatieri, has converted 7 of 8 PATs and both of his field goal attempts from 48 and 35 yards. The 48-yarder is the longest made field goal in the MSFL thus far this season.
The CCSJ defense has been just as dominant as the offense, shutting out Quincy and limiting OCU to seven points on a drive helped by a 50-yard reception by the Mighty Oaks. Their seven points allowed through two games is 43 fewer points than the team with the second-lowest total, Bellarmine with 50. The unit made a pair of defensive scores against OCU, an 18-yard fumble return by senior lineman Tony Madrueno and a 47-yard interception return by senior defensive back Daymon Johnson. Senior linebacker Trevor Busse has 13.0 tackles, including a pair for loss.
Versus Calumet
The Knights are 1-4 all-time against Calumet, dropping the last three contests, including in the MSFL Semifinals each of the last two seasons. The Crimson Wave downed the Knights 42-13 in last year's playoffs as Zaire Davis rushed for 181 yards and two touchdowns and Barbosa added a passing score and a rushing score. (Davis this season has just three rushing attempts for 15 yards.)
