LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University men's soccer team opened Atlantic Sun Conference play with a statement.
Redshirt senior midfielder
Brendan Schoemehl delivered a brace as the Knights scored three second-half goals in a 3-0 romp over Lipscomb on Saturday night at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
Sophomore midfielder
Nick Harshaw supplied a goal for Bellarmine (5-2-2, 1-0 ASUN), which won its fourth straight game while registering at least three goals for the third consecutive contest. Senior defender
Rhys Davies and redshirt junior midfielder
Cade Morgan collected an assist apiece against Lipscomb (1-6-2, 0-1).
Bellarmine was fresh off one of its most complete wins in the Division-I era after posting a commanding 3-0 victory in nonconference action at Bowling Green State. The Knights certainly carried that over into their ASUN debut against Lipscomb, emphatically ending a five-game losing streak to the Bisons.
Although it didn't score in the first half, Bellarmine had several promising chances. The Knights broke through early in the second half, as Schoemehl tucked a shot into the net off a Davies throw-in in the 51st minute.
The floodgates were opened. In the 68th minute, Harshaw made a run up the left side before making a deft cutback toward the center of the box and sinking a shot from 10 yards. It was his third goal of the season.
In the 73rd minute, Schoemehl tacked on his second goal as he drove home a header off a Morgan corner kick from near the 6. It was the second brace of his career after he netted two goals in a 3-2 double-overtime win over Stetson in the 2023 ASUN Tournament semifinals.
Bellarmine's defense limited Lipscomb to a single shot on goal, which ended with a diving save by redshirt senior goalkeeper
Peter Van Euwen. The Knights posted their fourth shutout.
Bellarmine finished with an 18-7 advantage in total shots, including 7-1 on frame.
Bellarmine will play at 5 p.m. (ET) Sunday, Oct. 5, in ASUN action at Central Arkansas.
