DAVIDSON, NC – Bellarmine wrestling continued its winning ways, knocking off Davidson for its fourth consecutive victory on Friday night in Belk Arena.
The Knights (6-4, 3-0 SoCon) turned in yet another convincing victory, defeating Davidson 38-3 on the road.
Over the course of the win streak, Bellarmine has scored 35+ points per match, racking up 163 total points while surrendering only 19 for an insane +144 scoring differential. The first of the four wins came against Sacred Heart as a final tuneup for Southern Conference action in which BU has been dominant, outscoring opponents 123-16 for a perfect 3-0 record.
The dual officially began with the 157-pound weight class where junior
Jeb Prechtel got the Knights on the board first with a win by forfeit.
From there, Bellarmine never looked back. At 165, redshirt sophomore
Noah Hall earned the first competitive win of the night with a 15-8 decision. Redshirt juniors
Grant O'Dell and
Keenan Wyatt followed with decision wins of their own to put Bellarmine ahead 15-0.
"The guys were aggressive tonight and wrestled hard," said head coach
Ned Shuck. "It's great to see them wrestling free and throwing a bunch of points on the score board We want to keep that going in the remaining SoCon duals and into the post season. I'm really proud of our progress."
At 197 pounds, redshirt sophomore
Andrew Liber broke the cycle, turning in a 15-5 major decision.
In the next bout, grad student
Daulton Mayer (285) notched another win by fall, pinning DJ Spring II in 1:58. The pin is Mayer's team leading eighth of the season and his third straight in SoCon matches.
Moving into the lightweight divisions, redshirt junior
Damion Ryan (125) delivered the moment of the night. Facing a 7-0 deficit in the third period, Ryan scored his first points on a takedown with 51 seconds left. He kept fighting, earning another takedown 20 seconds later to get withing two, still down 8-6. After another escape point for Brady Joling with 20 seconds left, Ryan did the impossible, getting a takedown and four back points as time expired to overtake Joling and steal the bout with a 13-10 decision.
After the excitement, redshirt junior
Trayce Eckman (133) and redshirt sophomore
AJ Rallo (141) made quick of their opponents, turning in 19-4 and 20-5 tech fall wins, respectively.
Davidson (4-11, 2-2 SoCon) got its lone win of the night in the final bout as Anderson Heap (149) earned a 7-1 decision over redshirt senior
