LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Considering the mounds of snow flanking the field at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium, it was a fitting spectacle that the Bellarmine University lacrosse team unleashed a flurry Saturday on Cleveland State.
The Knights took control after rattling off three goals in a little over a minute span in the fourth quarter, and their grasp of the contest was firm from there after the major turn of events in a 10-7 triumph over the Vikings.
Although Bellarmine (2-2) established an early 3-0 lead, the Knights found themselves trailing 7-6 heading into the fourth quarter. The score remained the same after four minutes, but then Bellarmine delivered the game-changing blow, ripping off three goals in only 65 seconds of action to surge to a two-goal lead.
Sophomore attack
Joe Alie equalized the contest at 7 off a feed from sophomore attack
Ezra Moore, who had two helpers. Thirty-seven seconds later, freshman attack
Jack Fischel staked Bellarmine to its first lead of the second half off an assist from senior attack
Michael Blaymires. It was Blaymires who almost immediately added an insurance goal, finding the net 28 seconds later off a connection with sophomore midfielder
Ty Washington.
Bellarmine's defense was buckled in during the fourth quarter. The Knights shut out the Vikings (0-3) in the period. With around two minutes remaining, junior attack
Ian Kohut put the finishing touch on the victory with his second goal.
John Alie recorded his third hat trick in four games and also distributed multiple assists for the third time this season. The senior attack's three goals leave him one shy of tying Kyle Playsted's program record for career goals (113). Two of Alie's goals on Saturday came in the third quarter when Bellarmine was trailing. He also registered two assists.
Nolan Hudnut racked up a season-high 19 saves as Bellarmine's defense conceded its fewest goals of the season. The sophomore goalkeeper was three saves off his career high and only one away from ranking in the program's all-time top 10 for a single game.
Joe Alie notched a pair of goals, including the first of the contest. That score and one by junior midfielder
Robert Pope bookended a goal by
John Alie as Bellarmine built a 3-0 lead midway through the first quarter.
Cleveland State answered with three consecutive goals to knot it up early in the second quarter. Kohut netted the first of his two goals to restore a Bellarmine lead, but the Vikings followed with yet another string of three straight goals, the first tying it at 4-4 at halftime.
Cleveland State twice held two-goal leads in the second half — at 6-4 and 7-5 — before the Knights churned out five unanswered scores to end the contest.
Bellarmine will head to Notre Dame for a 3 p.m. (ET) contest Tuesday.
