SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Senior attack
John Alie became the new goal-scoring king of Bellarmine University lacrosse, but No. 7 Notre Dame defeated the Knights 29-10 on Tuesday at Arlotta Family Lacrosse Stadium.
With two second-half goals against the Fighting Irish (2-0), Alie boosted his career total to 114 while overtaking the scoring mantle from Kyle Playsted. He tied the record on a brilliant back-handed shot from roughly 12 yards out and then zipped around the cage before firing in the record-breaker from close range.
Alie also distributed four assists for Bellarmine (2-3), which was only one helper shy of matching the single-game program record. The Knights were playing their third top 12 opponent in five games.
His brother,
Joe Alie, amassed a team-high four goals for the Knights. That tally was one short of tying his career high. Freshman attack
Jack Fischel also notched multiple goals after finding the net twice while sophomore attack
Ezra Moore collected three assists and a goal. Sophomore midfielder
Ty Washington added another score.
Notre Dame set a new single-game program record for scoring and looks poised to contend for its third national championship in four years. The Fighting Irish were a juggernaut offensively, scoring inside the first minute and rarely misfiring from there.
Notre Dame had nine players register multiple goals, with Brock Behrman pacing the Fighting Irish with four.
Freshman
Andrew Hoffmann made his collegiate debut after entering in the first quarter for Bellarmine. The freshman goalkeeper recorded 14 saves.
Bellarmine will play at noon (ET) Saturday at Detroit Mercy.
