BEVERLY HILLS, Mich. — Bellarmine University lacrosse motored to victory against the squad from the Motor City.
On Saturday afternoon at Detroit Country Day HS Indoor Field, three Knights recorded hat tricks while the defense blanked Detroit Mercy in the third quarter as Bellarmine posted a 16-9 win.
After breaking the program's all-time record for career goals in the previous game, senior attack
John Alie wasted no time beefing up the new mark, as he netted a match-high four goals for Bellarmine (3-3), which finished one score shy of its season high set against Mercyhurst.
Alie registered his fourth hat trick of the season, but he was far from alone in that department. His brother, sophomore attack
Joe Alie, put away three goals and matched his sibling with his fourth hat trick of the year.
Sophomore attack
Ezra Moore made it a trio of hat tricks for Bellarmine with his second three-goal effort of the season. Moore was the high point man of the match with six after also tallying three assists. It was the third time this season he accumulated three helpers or more.
Five total Knights produced multi-goal performances. Finding the net twice apiece against Detroit Mercy (1-3) were sophomore midfielder
Ty Washington and senior attack
Michael Blaymires. Freshman defender
Dillon O'Rourke and senior midfielder
Ryan Curry added one goal each.
The only time Bellarmine faced a deficit was at 2-1. The Knights bridged the first and second quarters with a 6-0 run that featured three goals from
Joe Alie.
It was 9-4 after a goal by Moore, but Detroit Mercy scored three of the last four goals in the period, the last with nine seconds remaining as the Knights held a 10-7 advantage at halftime.
Bellarmine regained momentum in the third quarter, outscoring Detroit Mercy 4-0 in the frame. When Curry capped the scoring in the period, the Knights had doubled up the Titans on the scoreboard at 14-7.
Bellarmine didn't allow Detroit Mercy to threaten in the fourth. The Knights' defense made sure of that by conceding only one goal over the first 10 minutes.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Nolan Hudnut finished with 13 saves. Junior defender
Robert MacMichael supplied three caused turnovers while senior
Ziggy Iannessa was 10-for-19 on face-offs.
Bellarmine had a 46-36 advantage in shots, including 31-22 on goal. The Knights converted on 4-of-7 man-up chances.
Bellarmine will host St. Bonaventure at noon (ET) Tuesday.
