LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Bellarmine men's tennis ended its first home weekend of the season on Sunday night, falling to Eastern Kentucky 4-3 at the Eddie Weber Tennis Complex.
Playing an uphill battle from the beginning with only two doubles teams and five singles in the lineup, the Knights had to give everything they had after a six-hour match on Saturday.
Despite the shorthand in doubles, the senior/freshman pairings of
Eli Wood/
Ryan Parkins and
Matthew Nice/
Colby Berson got the job done as both won their match. Wood and Parkins finished first in flight one, getting a quick 6-3 victory. Nice and Berson and to battle for their win, pushing into extra points for a 7-6 (8-6) victory to clinch the team point.
The Knights kept their momentum going into singles as Nice and Wood each collected their second win of the day. Wood once again made quick work of his opponent, earning a 6-3, 6-4 victory on court two. On court one, Nice overcame a dropped second set for a 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3 win.
From there, Eastern Kentucky flipped the script, winning the next three singles matches on courts three, four and five to tie the match at 3-3. Unfortunately for the Knights, the looming forfeit on court six decided the match in the Colonel's favor as they took a 4-3 win.
Up next, Bellarmine will close out its three match homestand next weekend, hosting James Madison on February 8 at the Eddie Weber Tennis Complex.
