LOUISVILLE, Ky. — On a frigid early afternoon at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium, the scoring units of the Bellarmine University and St. Bonaventure lacrosse teams took turns getting hot for the first three quarters.
Ultimately, it was the Bellarmine defense's ability to keep another offensive heat wave from developing in the final period that helped drive the Knights to a 14-12 win Tuesday over the Bonnies.
Senior attack
John Alie, sophomore attack
Ezra Moore and sophomore attack
Joe Alie each recorded a hat trick while combining for 11 goals for Bellarmine (4-3), which won its second straight game and third in the last four contests. The reigning ASUN Offensive Player of the Week,
John Alie and Moore racked up four goals apiece while
Joe Alie tallied three against the Bonnies (2-2).
It was a quintessential game of runs. Bellarmine had three straight goals in the first quarter to establish a 5-2 lead. St. Bonaventure then answered with three consecutive goals to tie it up, and the teams were deadlocked at 7 at halftime.
Bellarmine then rattled off five goals in a row to start the third quarter. Once again, however, St. Bonaventure responded with its own flurry, as the Bonnies delivered four straight goals to end the period trailing the Knights 12-11.
The fourth quarter was more about Bellarmine's defense halting St. Bonaventure's momentum than the Knights' offense getting on another roll. BU's defensive unit shut out the Bonnies for over 13 minutes in the last period before SBU found the net.
By then, sophomore attack
Ty Washington and
John Alie had added insurance goals to bump Bellarmine's advantage to a three-score lead. The Knights conceded a single goal in the fourth — with only 1:32 left — in buckling down to stop the momentum shifts and secure the win.
The four goals were a career high for Moore, who has notched three hat tricks this season.
John Alie registered his fourth hat trick of the season and has supplied nine goals in the last two games.
Joe Alie also collected his fourth hat trick of the year. Moore and
John Alie contributed two assists apiece as well.
Junior defender
Jackson Campisano and junior midfielder
Robert Pope put away one goal each. Junior defender
Matt Kirton piled up four caused turnovers while sophomore goalkeeper
Nolan Hudnut amassed 15 saves, marking his fourth outing this season with at least 15.
Bellarmine will host Long Island at 11:30 a.m. (ET) Sunday.
