Knights capture several top placements at Jim Vargo Invitational

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Bellarmine University track and field placed first in five events while Caysie Brady set another freshman program record in the women's hammer throw as the Knights hosted the Jim Vargo Invitational on Saturday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.

Brady was the runner-up in the hammer throw, and her toss of 50.96m topped her previous freshman program record of 50.87m set the previous week at the Ole Miss Classic. She also placed first in the discus (44.55m) for the Knights, who celebrated Senior Day.

Junior Amelia Svidal took top honors in the triple jump (11.99m), as did senior Alex Hooten in the men's 5000m (14:27.90), freshman Tola Taiwo in the triple jump (13.71m) and freshman Taevion Sweeney, sophomore Grant King, senior Zander Hooten and senior Zac Hutslar in the 4x400m relay (3:21.88).

Zander Hooten placed second in the 110m hurdles (14.68) and Sweeney was fourth (15.33) while freshman Landen Fernandez was second in the 3000m steeplechase (9:55.46) and sophomore Jimmy Dillabaugh was third (10:00.99). The Knights had four top-10 finishes in the 5000m, as sophomore Salah Farah followed Alex Hooten in second (14:49.73), freshman Jared Fairbanks was fourth (14:53.84) and junior Chase Austin was ninth (15:14.63).

Freshman Dylan Forster placed second in the shot put (15.95m) while junior Enrico Busato was fifth (14.73m) and sophomore Will Bracher was seventh (14.19m). The Knights also had three top 10s in the discus in senior Alex Cole (third, 44.66m), Busato (eighth, 42.40m) and Bracher (10th, 40.10m). Bracher was fifth (48.44m) and freshman Martin Garcia was sixth (47.36m) in the hammer throw.

Senior Jansen Story was the runner-up in the women's 800m (2:17.47), as was junior Annie Somwe in the triple jump (11.62m), while junior Aubrey Lane was fourth in the 400m (57.89) and junior Haden Wolfe was fifth in the discus (36.14m). Senior Sierra Oesterling placed eighth in the 5000m (17:59.37), as did freshman Kate Alvis in the 100m (12.62).

Sophomore Raylon Wilson tied for third in the men's high jump (1.87m), and King placed fourth in the 400m (49.40). Rounding out the top 10s were freshman Buzz Christensen in the 800m (ninth, 2:00.58), junior Carter Olmsted in the 100m (10th, 11.12) and senior Derek Combs in the 200m (10th, 22.64).

Bellarmine will compete April 10-11 in the Tennessee Invite at the University of Tennessee.
