MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa.—The No. 8 Bellarmine University field hockey team ran out of steam after playing their third game in three days as they fell in overtime to Robert Morris University 3-2 on Tuesday afternoon.
The Colonials (3-9) came out on the attack getting two penalty corners and three shots off in the first two minutes of the game.
Bellarmine(11-2) withstood the barrage of shots though and took a 1-0 lead off a penalty corner when Rachael McAllister (Louisville, Ky., Assumption) passed into Carrie Walker (Louisville, Ky., Male), who gave it right back to McAllister for the go-ahead goal. Walker's assist marks Bellarmine's 37th on the season which sets a new school record.
Play was physical throughout the game as Robert Morris was hit with two green cards in the first half, followed by a yellow card toward the end of regulation.
The Colonials would tie the game up with just 19 seconds to go before halftime when Julie Gabriel redirected a shot past Bellarmine goalie Samantha Biedron (Saint John, Ind., Homewood-Flossmoor).
The Knights outshot Robert Morris 4-2 during the opening period but the Colonials owned a 7-2 advantage in penalty corners.
Bellarmine regained the lead 2-1 at the 49:36 mark when Ellen West (Louisville, Ky., Christian Academy) dished to Rachael Walz (Louisville, Ky., Assumption High School) for the goal, the fifth time this season the two have connected on goals.
Robert Morris had the answer though as Gabriel had her second goal on the day in the 60th-minute which sent the game into overtime.
In overtime, Gabriel got loose again as she rocketed a pass off a penalty corner that found the back of the cage, giving Robert Morris the 3-2 overtime victory.
For the game the Colonials outshot Bellarmine 16-10 with Biedron being credited with four saves.
The Knights will play two games this Saturday when they face Trine University at 1:30 p.m. and Hendrix College at 7:30 p.m.
