LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Bellarmine University Knights volleyball squad fell 3-1 (25-19, 22-25, 25-12, 28-26) to the Missouri S&T Miners on Saturday night at Knights Hall.
The Knights fall to 6-6 (2-6 GLVC)on the season. The Miners maintained their unblemished GLVC record as they advanced to 11-3 (8-0 GLVC), and continued their nine-game win streak.
Bellarmine was unable to gain a lead in the first set, but the second set allowed the Knights to shine. Tied 18-18, the Knights broke away from the Miners to force a fourth set, thanks in part to stellar serving by
Lucy Heidrich.
Unable to build off the momentum, the Knights quickly fell behind from a 5-5 tie in the third set to a tough 25-12 loss. Setter Jennifer Costello helped the Miners break away from the Knights, who were unable to gain another lead.
Libero
Jaclyn Ohlmann helped the Knights jump to a quick 7-1 lead over the Miners, who managed to fight back and tie the score at 9. The set remained neck-and-neck through the remainder, with ten total tie scores throughout the set. Despite more great serving from Ohlmann late in the game, the Miners were able to pull out the 28-26 win to wrap up the match.
Sophomore
Krista Gibson led the Knights defensive attack with 15 kills on the night, followed closely by teammate
Paula Byrns with 11. Setter
Bailey BredenbeckCorp registered 36 assists and 10 digs. Along with her great serving skills, Ohlmann dug up 22 attacks for the Knights.
Erin Bekebrede led the Miners defense with 15 kills. Three other Miners registered double digit kills in the match. Costello tallied 36 assists in the win.
The Knights will be back in action Sunday afternoon against the Panthers of Drury University. First serve is set for 1 PM at Knights Hall.
