Knights go into Saturday play with even tournament record

AURORA, Ill. – The Bellarmine University volleyball Knights dropped one match to Northern Michigan (27-29, 25-24, 25-19, 23-25, 13-15), but came up with a win against Grand Valley State (15-25-, 27-25, 25-20, 25-18) on Friday in the first round of the 2011 Mizuno GLVC/GLIAC Crossover event.  
 
Bellarmine, who entered the event as the No. 8 seed for the Great Lakes Valley Conference, now stands at 10-7 (5-6 GLVC) on the season. The match against Northern Michigan marks the first match the Knights have lost in the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover event in the past three years.
 
Bellarmine middle attacker Alyson Harmeling nailed 14 kills in the loss against Northern Michigan. She led a squad of four Knights who tallied kills in the double digits. Paula Byrns, last week's GLVC/Baden Player of the Week, had 11 kills, eight digs, and five blocks. Jaclyn Ohlmann led the defensive effort with 19 digs in the first match.
 
Harmeling and Byrns again shined on offense in the second match, tallying 12 and 14 kills respectively, while teammate Krista Gibson slammed a match-high 16 kills. Ohlmann once again led the defense, as she came up with a match-high 20 digs.
 
Bellarmine's primary setter, sophomore Bailey BredenbeckCorp, had 89 assists total in the two matches.
 
Following the first day of play, the GLVC teams have compiled a 13-11 record, compared to the GLIAC record of 11-13.  
 
The Knights will finish up the event on Saturday at 2:00 PM as they take on Ashland University.
