LOUISVILLE, Ky. --- Under the lights of Owsley B. Frazier Stadium on Thursday night, the Bellarmine University field hockey team scored a 7-3 victory over instate rival Centre College Colonels behind one goal and four assists from junior
Rachael Walz.
The visitors from Danville, Ky. got on the board first in the fourth minute when midfielder Alexis Hebert redirected a pass from Barabra Parks into the cage for the 1-0 lead. However, it did not take long for Bellarmine to even things up, as
Brittany Raque picked up a rebound in front of Centre keeper Patty Cowley and sent it home for the 1-1 tie.
Sophomore
Rachael McAllister would help Bellarmine stretch out the lead before half as she added a pair of goals in the 11th and 20th minute to help the Knights take a 3-1 into the break.
The Colonels would not go down easily as they came out firing to open the second half, scoring twice to draw even at three. From there, Bellarmine took over, kicking their top ranked offense into high gear, rolling off four goals to end the game. Walz, who leads Div.-II in points per game, had a hand in all four goals, getting an unassisted goal at the 44:30 mark, and then finding
Alex Ojeda,
Lauren Schmeing, and
Dezirae Hall for goals.
Dominating on both sides of the field, Bellarmine tallied 25 shots on the night, while holding Centre to just three shots on goal.
Bellarmine has a quick turnaround as they hit the road this weekend for a two game set in Gaffney, S.C. taking on St. Anselm College on Sunday and then host Limestone College on Monday afternoon.
