LOUISVILLE, Ky. --- Bellarmine University volleyball (11-9, 5-8 GLVC) squandered an early lead to drop a Great Lakes Valley Conference match to No. 20 Lewis University 25-18, 19-25, 15-25, 22-25 Saturday afternoon at Knights Hall.
Krista Gibson and
Paula Byrns led the team with 15 kills apiece for the Knights, who dropped their second consecutive match.
Bellarmine held the lead the entire first set en route to a 25-18 victory.
Bailey BredenbeckCorp paced the offensive attack with 15 assists in the opening frame. Byrns tallied seven of her kills for the contest in the first set.
Jaclyn Ohlmann led the defensive effort with 11 digs in set one.
The Knights missed an opportunity to take control of the match in set two. The frame featured six tied scores and one lead change.
Erika Isham (four) and
Lucy Heidrich (three) led the offensive attack in the second set for Bellarmine.
The Knights failed to hold a lead in the final two sets en route to their second defeat of the weekend. Bellarmine rallied from a 19-10 deficit in the final frame to come within 24-22. After a long rally on match point, Gibson's attack error ended the comeback and the match.
BredenbeckCorp finished with 40 assists after being pulled in favor of setter
Lauryn Hyman in set three. Freshman Isham tallied eight kills for the match and fellow newcomer Ohlmann recorded a match-high 24 digs.
Bellarmine returns to Knights Hall Tuesday against GLVC foe No. 12 Northern Kentucky at 7 p.m.
