11/5/2011 6:31:00 PM

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Bellarmine University Knights volleyball squad fell 3-1 (25-23, 15-25, 21-25, 23-25) in their last regular season match to the Southern Indiana University Screaming Eagles at Knights Hall Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Knights finished the season 13-12 (7-11 GLVC). The Screaming Eagles advanced to 20-9 (14-4 GLVC).

Before the match, the Knights honored manager Mari Graham for Senior Day.

A tumultuous first set, which saw five tie scores and two lead changes, ended in victory for the Knights. Bellarmine jumped to an early 4-0 lead, but Southern Indiana was able to fight back to tie the set at 10. The teams continued to battle back and forth until the Knights overcame a 23-22 deficit for the win. Krista Gibson and Alyson Harmeling each had five kills apiece in the first set to lead the Knights attack.

The Screaming Eagles rallied to easily down the Knights in the next two sets, as they relinquished their lead only once. The final set proved to be reminiscent of the first, this time with seven tie scores and two lead changes. Tied at 21, the Screaming Eagles took a timeout and came back to gain control of the game off a kill by Lauren DeShaney. The Knights kept the score close, but were unable to earn the win.

Gibson continued her offensive prowess from the first set, as she went on to slam a match-high 16 kills. Southern Indiana had a much more balanced attack, as Danielle LaGrange (15 kills), DeShaney (10 kills) and Emily Diedrich (10 kills) led the Screaming Eagles to victory.

Bellarmine primary setter Bailey BredenbeckCorp tallied a match-high 44 assists, while Jaclyn Ohlmann (19 digs) and Whitney Tormoehlen (14 digs) proved to be assets for the Knights defense.

The Knights narrowly missed the last wild cart spot for the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament held next weekend to Drury, who defeated William Jewell College this afternoon.
