OWENSBORO, Ky.—The Bellarmine University men's soccer team walloped Kentucky Wesleyan 9-0 this afternoon in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game.
The Knights again got major contributions from freshmen as
Dan Schiavi,
Jacob Kaye and
Shane Mihaljevic combined for four goals and four assists in the runaway victory.
For the game, Bellarmine outshot KWC 21-4 as freshman goalkeeper
Blake Hunter made three saves in recording the shutout.
Bellarmine's
John Cantrell started the game's scoring in the 10th minute off a Schiavi assist. Just two and a half minutes later, Schiavi found
Matt Odem for a score to extend the lead to 2-0.
Before the clock hit the 27th minute, Bellarmine had pulled out to a 5-0 advantage, and the route was on. By game's end, eight different Bellarmine players had recorded goals and another—
Matt Weston—found the scoring column with two assists.
With the victory, Bellarmine improves to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play. The Panthers fall to 2-2, 0-2.
Bellarmine returns home this weekend for a Friday contest with Rockhurst and a Sunday game against GLVC newcomer William Jewell.
