DANVILLE, Ky,.--The Bellarmine University field hockey team played its fourth consecutive road game tonight, but got to stay within the Commonwealth as the Knights faced off against Centre College in Danville, defeating the home squad 4-1.
Bellarmine broke open the scoring less than five minutes into the game when
Lauren Schmeing found the back of the cage at the 30:36 mark of the opening half. Centre's Erin Bacon scored the equalizer just a little over a minute later, but the Knights went on to build a 3-1 halftime advantage on goals by
Dezirae Hall and
Brittany Raque.
In the closing period, only Bellarmine's
Connor Galle broke through for a score as the Knights won by the final of 4-1.
Bellarmine outshot the Colonels 27-20, but the home team owned a 16-9 advantage on penalty corners.
The Knights' goalkeeping duties were shared by
Megan Martiny and
Katie Lange with the duo combining for 11 saves on the evening.
With the win, Bellarmine improves to 3-2 on the season. Meanwhile, Centre drops to 2-2.
The Knights now get a 10-day rest before hosting Sewanee at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium on Sept. 24.
