LOUISVILLE, Ky. ---Led by a group of young guns, the Bellarmine University men's soccer team will open up Great Lakes Valley Conference play this weekend as they host Southern Indiana on Friday before traveling to Kentucky Wesleyan on Sunday.
The Knights (1-1, 0-0 GLVC) opened the season last weekend with a loss at Tiffin, 3-2, before rolling over Findlay, 6-0. Of the eight goals scored last weekend, seven were by freshman. Striker
Shane Mihaljevic led the charge as he came away with three goals and an assist on the season while fellow freshman
Jacob Kaye chipped in two goals and an assist as well.
The offense was in high gear for Bellarmine as they combined to outshoot Tiffin and Findlay 35-15 and owned an 18-10 advantage in corner kicks.
Southern Indiana (1-1, 0-0 GLVC) comes in to Owsley B. Frazier Stadium after a road trip through the state of West Virginia that included a matchup against No. 6 West Virginia Wesleyan. The Screaming Eagles were competitive in that game but fell 1-0 in overtime. USI also defeated Davis & Elkins College, 1-0.
Last year, Bellarmine defeated Southern Indiana in dramatic fashion, coming away with a 3-2 overtime victory after goal from departed senior
Bradley Barraclough. USI leads the all-time series 21-11-1, but the Knights have won four out of the last five matchups.
On Sunday, Bellarmine will travel to Owensboro, Ky. to take on the Panthers of Kentucky Wesleyan, who are fresh off a 6-0 victory over crosstown foe Brescia University. The Knights have dominated KWC recently, winning the past eight matches while posting seven shutouts.
Bellarmine and Southern Indiana are set for a 6:30 PM start time, with the game against Kentucky Wesleyan scheduled for a 1:00 PM kickoff.
