Knights battle No. 8 Panthers to 1-1 tie

10/5/2012 10:02:00 PM

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine University men's soccer team had the No. 8 Drury Panthers on the ropes several times but failed to deliver the knockout blow and the Knights had to settle for a 1-1 tie in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium tonight.

Bellarmine drew first blood when Justin Klenke headed in a free kick off the foot of Dan Schiavi in the 26th minute.  Drury got the equalizer in the 78th minute also on a header as Scott Stiffler converted a throw-in from Nick Ammann.

Drury maintained possession for much of the second half and overtime periods, but Bellarmine owned a 21-12 shot advantage in the game that featured 33 fouls whistled. Of the Knights' 21 shots, three bounded off either the crossbar or goal post as Bellarmine just missed on scoring chances throughout the game.

Two of Bellarmine's best opportunities to score occurred in the second overtime period.  Schiavi got loose on a breakaway and unleashed a hard shot that ricocheted off the cross bar, then about two minutes later Jacob Kaye had an open shot on an untended goal that sailed wide left.

Bellarmine's defense, which entered the game ranked seventh nationally in goals against average, rose to the occasion on a number of Drury scoring chances, including denying a shot off a corner kick in the final 60 seconds of the game.

The tie leaves Bellarmine with a 6-2-2 record overall and a GLVC mark of 5-1-2, which drops them into a tie for fourth pending the outcome of the Quincy-Indianapolis game being played later tonight.  Drury moves to 8-1-2 overall, and are a half-game ahead of the Knights with a 6-1-2 GLVC.

Bellarmine returns to action on Sunday afternoon when they host Missouri S&T in a 2:30 p.m. contest.
