Box Score DANVILLE, Ky. --- The Bellarmine University field hockey team sustained a tough loss on Wednesday night, falling in overtime to Centre College 2-1.
The loss drops Bellarmine to an even 4-4 on the year while Centre improves to 3-4.
It took Centre just 1:49 to get on the board as senior Erin Bacon collected her own rebound and found the back of the cage to put the Colonels up 1-0. Bellarmine tried to answer quickly, but Centre's stout defense cleared two consecutive shots off the goal line in the 4th-minute.
Bellarmine then misfired on a penalty stroke in the 14th-minute followed by the Colonel backline registering a third defensive save in the 27th-minute. Bellarmine was finally able to break through deep into the half when senior defender
Shelby Daeschner rocketed a shot past Centre keeper CeCe Lindsey for her first career goal with just under two minutes to play.
The Knights failed to capitalize on a second penalty corner in the second half but was helped out by allowing the Colonels just one shot on goal, forcing the game into an extra period.
Centre came out the aggressor in overtime but BU's
Megan Martiny, making her first start of the season, made four consecutive saves to keep the game alive. The junior could not find the fifth shot, as Chelsea Klein's golden goal at the 77:27 mark sent the Colonels to victory.
Bellarmine will be back in action this Sunday, returning to Owsley B. Frazier Stadium to host Limestone College at 1:00 p.m.
