Knights turn in strong performances in double dual meet

Season bests highlight Friday night action

INDIANAPOLIS --- Back in the pool for the first time in nearly a month, the Bellarmine Knights men's and women's swim teams each dropped a double-meet on Friday night against Indianapolis and William Jewell held at UIndy's Ruth Lilly Center.  One of the premier program's in the country, UIndy is ranked No. 7 in the both the men's and women's polls.

The meet is a look into the future for all three programs as the trio will become conference foes next year when the Great Lakes Valley Conference adds swimming as a sponsored sport.

Freshman Amanda Forti had a busy night, racking up the yardage in her two individual events. The Manual High School product took fourth place in the 400 IM then came back and finished second in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:36.38. Forti also swam the backstroke leg on the 200 yard medley relay that came in third to open the meet.

Numerous Knights turned in season bests for Coach John Brucato including Casey Guernsey in the 50 yard freestyle and Brogan Uphoff in the 100 yard butterfly. Guernsey's time of 28.59 was her best of the season by nearly one full second while Uphoff dropped two and a half seconds off her previous best.

On the men's side, Michael Polio was BU's top performer in the men's 100 butterfly and the 200 yard freestyle. In the butterfly Polio clocked a time of 56.09, barely missing out on third place.

Meanwhile, Bellarmine had a pair of strong performances in the 100 breaststroke with Trent Mattingly posting a runner-up finish with a time of 1:02.96 and Josh Underwood having a season-best time of 1:09.38.

The Knights will have two more weeks of practice before their next meet, another double-dual meet against Centre College and Birmingham-Southern College, hosted by Centre in Danville, Ky.
