Box Score LOUISVILLE, Ky.--The Bellarmine University field hockey team defeated the previously unbeaten Centre College Colonels 3-1 tonight in a game at Bellarmine's Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.

The Colonels, who came in sporting a perfect 8-0 record, found themselves in a 3-0 deficit early in the proceedings, and the Knights fended off their Division III foes to hang on for a 3-1 victory.

Bellarmine got on the board just 2:48 into the game when Alex Ojeda took a pass from Brittany Raque and rifled a shot from about 18 yards past Colonel goalkeeper Kirby Roberts.

The Knights extended the lead exactly nine minutes later when Rachael Walz hit Alexis Van Wallaghen with pass just in front of the goal, and the sophomore forward deposited the ball in the left side of the cage.

Walz struck again for the Knights with just under 10 minutes remaining in the first half when she picked off an errant Centre pass and dribbled inside the arc and beat Roberts with a shot from the left side.

The Colonels finally broke into the scoring column 28:16 into the game when Bellarmine goalie Alex Moro came out and deflected a pass but Centre's Chelsea Klein was there to collect the rebound and shoot it into the unguarded cage. The goal ended the scoring as the teams went into halftime with the Knights holding the 3-1 advantage.

After the break, Centre controlled possession for the better part of the 35 minutes. However, the Colonels could not break through the Bellarmine defense. Despite outshooting the Knights 10-0 and owning a 9-1 penalty corner advantage in the second period, Centre could not get back on the scoreboard as the Bellarmine "D" held firm and preserved the 3-1 victory.

The Knights improve to 3-5 on the season while Centre falls to 8-1. A rematch between the in-state rivals will be played Oct. 29 in Danville.

Bellarmine returns to action next Wednesday when they host the No. 6 Limestone Saints in a game set to begin at 3:55.
