10/29/2013 10:46:00 PM

Box Score DANVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine University field hockey team completed a sweep of intrastate rival Centre College tonight by going on the road and defeating the Colonels 3-2 as senior goalkeeper Megan Martiny recorded eight saves for the Knights.

The host Colonels got on the board first, but the Knights answered with first half goals by Kelcie Hill and Rachael Walz to give the visitors a 2-1 halftime lead.

After the break, Bellarmine's Rachael McAllister found the back of the cage to build the Knights' lead to 3-1.  However, Centre kept applying pressure and outshot Bellarmine 11-4 in the second frame.  The Colonels eventually broke through for a score in the 54th minute to climb within one of the Knights, but Martiny and the Bellarmine defense shut out the Colonels the rest of the way to hang on for the victory.

Bellarmine improves to 7-9 on the season while Centre falls to 12-3.  The loss was the second of the season to Bellarmine as Knights took a 3-1 win on Oct. 1 at Bellarmine.

The Knights are back in action on Sunday at 6 p.m. in their final home game of the season.  Belllarmine will honor its departing senior class prior to their game against Rhodes College.
