Box Score LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The Bellarmine University men's soccer team fought their way to a 0-0 tie with #8 Lewis University Friday night. Despite the combined 31 shots, neither team could find the back of the net in the tough conference match.
"I am pleased with our resilience in the second half tonight," said head coach
Tim Chastonay. "We fought through some of the most difficult weather circustances and we did not concede when we were against the game."Â
The first half was an even contest between the two squads. Bellarmine created several chances in the first period but to no avail. Several deep throw ins by freshman midfielder
Timmy Miller and a 36th minute corner kick all delivered dangerous balls into the box, but the Knights could not convert their chances into goals to take a lead against the eighth-ranked Flyers.
The Knights outshot the Flyers 6-4 in the half, but neither team could put in a goal in the first 45 minutes, and the half came to an uneventful close 0-0.
In a rain drenched second half, the teams battled through 45 more minutes of scoreless gameplay. A 67th minute blast from 25 yards by Bellarmine junior midfielder
Dan Schiavi was saved by diving senior goalkeeper Alec Pickett for one of his five saves on the night, and a 70th minute header by freshman defender
Zach Digan created another opportunity for the Knights, but the score remained 0-0 late in the second period.
Three shots by Bellarmine in the final five minutes of regulation put BU on the offensive in the waning minutes, but the teams headed to overtime.
Despite the seven shots and aggressive play in overtime by the two teams, neither could break the defensive deadlock and the final whistle blew with the teams even, 0-0.Â
"We need to do a better job keeping our composure through adverse situations," said Chastonay.
Bellarmine took 14 shots in the game to Lewis' 17. Bellarmine owned a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks, and BU junior goalkeeper
Blake Hunter had four big saves on the evening.
"I thought that Blake saved us tonight with an individual effort in the second half," said chastonay.
Junior forward
Kai Qualah led the Knights in shots with four. Lewis forward Cristhian Ramirez led the Flyers with five shots.
With the tie, Bellarmine moves to 5-2-2 overall and 3-2-2 in the conference. Lewis becomes 6-0-3 overall, 5-0-3 in the GLVC.
"Now we have to recorver and prepare for a very tough Parkside team Sunday afternoon," said Chastonay.
Bellarmine returns to Owsley B. Frazier Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 6 for a 2:30 p.m. game with the Rangers of Wisconsin-Parkside. The Knights topped UWP 2-0 last year in Somers, Wisc.
