Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Despite a colossal effort from senior goalkeeper
Lara Williams, the Bellarmine University field hockey team was edged 2-1 in overtime by American International in the Knights' regular-season debut on Friday.
A University of Louisville transfer, Williams corralled 17 saves for Bellarmine (0-1-0), which tied for the fifth-best single-game total in BU history. It was the most saves for a Knights keeper since Brittany Norris recorded 18 in October of 2008.
After a 1-all deadlock in regulation, Erica McLean scored on a rebound off an assist from Jenna Masionis to send American International (1-0-0) to the victory. McLean was also involved in the Yellow Jackets' first goal, notching the assist on a Taylor Ruscillo score in the 42nd minute.
Bellarmine matched American International with its lone goal in the 46th minute. Sophomore forward
Kathryn Schneidtmiller converted a rebound and the assist went to senior
Alex Ojeda on the score. That would be the last time either team found the net before overtime.
American International outshot Bellarmine 28-20, including 20-7 on goal. Ojeda led the Knights with six shots, including two on goal, which matched senior midfielder
Meghan Williams and Schneidtmiller for the team high.
Masionis took 10 shots for the Yellow Jackets, with six coming on goal. Keeper Ainslee Penfield recorded six saves for American International.
Bellarmine plays at 1 p.m. (ET) on Saturday at Assumption College. The game can be followed live
