Box Score LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine University volleyball team opened its 2014 season hosting Anderson University (SC) in the opening round of the Bellarmine Volleyball Classic, falling in four sets (25-21, 24-26, 18-25, 23-25) to the visiting Trojans on Friday night in Knights Hall.
The Knights opened with a 25-21 win in the first set, but Anderson ramped up its blocking game and roared back with three straight wins for the victory. On the night, Anderson outblocked Bellarmine 17-5 in a match dominated by defense. Anderson's Jessica Harris proved to be a significant obstacle for the Bellarmine offense, being part of 11 of the Trojans' 17 team blocks.
The Trojans hit just .149 for the match, but manage to outhit Bellarmine, which posted a .090 attack percentage. The match featured 326 total attacks but just 92 successful kills as the teams combined for 154 digs.
Bellarmine's
Emily McDaniel led all hitters with 20 kills while posting a double-double with 14 digs as well. The Trojans posted only 40 total kills, with only by Kendall Vallancourt reaching double digits in kills with 10.
Freshmen
Hayden Dailey and
Allie Muha had impressive collegiate debuts for the Knights as Dailey recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 18 digs and Muha led all players with 45 assists on Bellarmine's 52 kills.
Bellarmine's
Jaclyn Ohlmann, the defending GLVC Libero of the Year, led all players with 23 digs. Anderson's Alix Hooker came up with 22 for the Trojans.
The season opener for both squads, Anderson will take a 1-0 record into tomorrow's second day of the Bellarmine Volleyball Classic. The Knights will try to even their record on Saturday morning as they face Mercyhurst at 12:30 p.m. before squaring off against Salem International at 7:30 p.m. to close out the tournament.
