LOUISVILLE, Ky. — For the Bellarmine University men's soccer team, the contest on the national platform is now in the distance and Great Lakes Valley Conference play is on the horizon. In between, though, is a matchup with former league rival Kentucky Wesleyan College.
On Tuesday, the Knights (1-1-0) will host the Panthers (0-1-0) at 3:55 p.m. at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium in their final nonconference game of the regular season. In the same scenario last year, Bellarmine pulled out a 2-1 road victory before GLVC action began.
"They played us very hard and had stretches of the game where they were better," BU Head Coach
Tim Chastonay said. "It's important for us to put Sunday behind us and be ready on Tuesday. We will need a great effort to get a result."
The aforementioned Sunday game was a 3-2 loss in overtime to 19th-ranked Ohio Dominican. The match was highlighted as the NSCAA-TV Game of the Week and webcasted for a national audience. It was a nip-and-tuck affair that featured particularly splendid machinations in the second half and overtime, when all the goals were deposited.
"The game showed the coaching staff quite a bit — both good and in some areas we need to improve on," Chastonay said. "Overall, we gave great effort and competed very well. They rose to the occasion on the national stage and getting them to do that every game will be the challenge."
Kentucky Wesleyan opened the season on Thursday with a 1-0 loss to Southern Indiana. The Panthers didn't allow the Screaming Eagles to find the net until the 71st minute as keeper Grant Allen totaled five saves. Forward Christakis Agisilaou attempted four of KWC's eight shots, with two coming on goal.
Senior midfielder
Dan Schiavi and senior forward
Kai Qualah scored for Bellarmine against Ohio Dominican. Schiavi also found the net in a 4-0 opening win over Oakland City along with freshman defender
Brendon Ebert, sophomore defender
Zach Digan and freshman midfielder
Joe Workman.
"We have been creating good chances and have scored some great goals," Chastonay said. "Hopefully the guys will continue to become comfortable with each other and our timing of passes and runs improves."
