LOUISVILLE, Ky. — In its final exhibition of the preseason, the Bellarmine University men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with Spalding (Ky.) University on Friday night at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
Sophomore forward
Joe Workman scored off an assist from junior midfielder
Jared Kemper in the first half, while Spalding's Julie DeLeon knotted it up in the second half after sinking a penalty kick.
Both teams posted five shots on goal, with Spalding attempting 13 overall to the 10 of Bellarmine. The Knights had a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. The two teams agreed after regulation ended not to engage in overtime.
In the 18th minute of the first half, Kemper connected on a powerful header that led to Workman making an open run toward the oncoming Spalding goalkeeper. Workman laced the ball into the open net for a 1-0 lead.
The score remained that way until the 57th minute. Spalding's Sergio Vancini had a pair of shots blocked by the Knights just ahead of the goal. A hand ball by BU followed, and DeLeon made good on the penalty kick.
All four of Bellarmine's goalkeepers saw action. Junior
Tommy Hebert started before junior
Evan Loyd entered, while freshman
Zach Pogue came on next and senior
Connor Murphy closed out the exhibition. The four combined for four saves. Spalding used three keepers, with starter Logan Spencer tallying two of the team's four saves.
Bellarmine opens the season with two neutral-site games at Indianapolis. The Knights will meet Cedarville on Thursday and Davis & Elkins on Saturday, Sept. 5.
