LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Freshman
Gilio Aviles scored the game-winning goal in the second half as the Bellarmine University men's soccer team captured a 2-1 victory over Georgetown College in an exhibition match on Wednesday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
In Bellarmine's first competitive action of the 2016 season, sophomore midfielder
Magnus Bertilsson added a goal for the Knights in the first half and senior forward
Luke Mocherman chipped in an assist.
Bellarmine outshot Georgetown College 20-3, but the Tigers didn't waste any time in capitalizing on their first chance. A mere 25 seconds into the exhibition, Nick Gregory ran down a pass from Noel Roman and freed himself up for an open look, which he converted for a quick 1-0 lead.
That got the Knights' attention. Bellarmine would allow a mere two shots the rest of the match.
Bellarmine knotted the score at 1-1 in the 21st minute when Bertilsson ripped a shot from 22 yards in the center of the field into the left corner of the net. The score remained unchanged at halftime, with the Knights owning a 10-3 advantage in first-half shots.
Bellarmine took the lead in the 59th minute when Mocherman crossed to Aviles sprinting down the right side. The freshman fired a shot inside the far post for the go-ahead goal.
Bellarmine made Aviles' score stand up, clamping down defensively in not allowing the Tigers a shot in the second half. The Knights took 10 shots after the intermission.
Bellarmine Coach
Tim Chastonay substituted liberally, as 24 players saw action. Senior
Tommy Hebert played the first half in goal, while sophomore
Zach Pogue played most of the second half before freshman
Andrew Hagan closed it out.
Bellarmine hosts Spalding at 7 p.m. (ET) Friday in its final exhibition.
