LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University men's soccer team tied Spalding 1-1 Friday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium in its final exhibition match of the preseason.
Bellarmine scored late in the first half, while Spalding scored deep in the second half. Fouls led to both goals.
In the 44th minute, Bellarmine junior midfielder
Callum Southern ripped a free kick in the center of the field from 30 yards out, curling the shot inside the left post for a 1-0 lead.
With a little over one minute remaining in the exhibition, Spalding answered. Bellarmine fouled the Golden Eagles inside the box, and Joey Lesher sank the equalizer on a penalty kick.
Bellarmine dominated the first half and attempted 13 shots to a single one for Spalding. However, the second half was played much more evenly, as the Knights held a slim 7-5 advantage in shots. BU finished with an 8-2 superiority in corner kicks.
Bellarmine opens the regular season Thursday at Davis & Elkins.
