Knights field hockey to welcome Seton Hill, Mercyhurst on opening weekend

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University field hockey team's largely uninterrupted string of matches at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium extending through the first week of October begins this weekend.

The Knights open the regular season by hosting Seton Hill at 11 a.m. (ET) Saturday before welcoming Mercyhurst at 11 a.m. Sunday in a pair of nonconference contests. In stark contrast to last season's road-heavy schedule, Bellarmine boasts 10 home matches — not to mention a Sept. 22 exhibition against Concordia — through Oct. 8 with only a pair of road outings in that span.

Seton Hill went 1-15 last season, including a 5-3 loss to Bellarmine. The Griffins have been picked to finish 11th in the preseason Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference coaches' poll. While Seton Hill struggled to achieve success in 2015, the Griffins were not dealt lopsided losses very often. Over their final 11 matches, they won one contest and lost by two goals or less in seven others.

Mercyhurst has been predicted to finish eighth in the PSAC. The Lakers went 8-10 last season, falling 3-2 in overtime to Bellarmine in the season opener. All-PSAC selection Jessica Brandon is back after leading Mercyhurst with eight goals last season.

Bellarmine has been picked to finish second behind Limestone in the Eastern College Athletic Conference after earning runner-up honors in the ECAC Tournament the last two seasons. The Knights are coming off a 10-7 campaign.

On Sunday, Bellarmine defeated Centre College 1-0 in an exhibition at Frazier Stadium. Senior midfielder Aimee Ilgenfritz collected the goal for the Knights, whose defense allowed only two shots.
