LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University men's soccer team will seek to get back on the winning track in Great Lakes Valley Conference play this weekend at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
The Knights (2-4-1, 1-3 GLVC) will host Lewis (1-5, 0-4) at 6:30 p.m. (ET) Friday and Wisconsin-Parkside (2-3-1, 0-3-1) at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
Bellarmine has lost three-straight matches while attempting to overcome the huge absences of five projected senior starters to injury. In the midst of an unexpected youth movement, the Knights have remained competitive, with only one loss coming by more than one goal.
"I think this team is just focused on getting better each day," Bellarmine Coach
Tim Chastonay said. "I think the coaches and players are confident we can get results if we continue to improve each day. It's definitely going to be a learning process with some ups and downs. The group has remained focused, and that is very positive. They want to learn from the staff and they want to get better."
Lewis is coming off a 1-0 loss to Missouri S&T, marking the only time the Flyers have been held scoreless this season. Timm Adler leads Lewis with two goals.
Wisconsin-Parkside played to a scoreless tie with Missouri S&T before falling 3-2 to undefeated Drury. Antonio Gonzalez and Ryan Shogren have collected two goals each for the Rangers.
"This weekend will be a real challenge for our guys," Chastonay said. "Lewis has always been one of the best programs in the GLVC. Evan Fiffles is an excellent coach, and his teams are always prepared. His teams defend really well and always have some dangerous attacking players. They have struggled over the first two GLVC weekends to get results but have been in every game.
"Wisconsin-Parkside has also struggled early to get GLVC results but should improve as the year progresses. They have several returning players from last year and are a well-coached team. We have really struggled to get a result against them over the last several years. We have lost some real close games to this group."
Despite registering more shots than both opponents, Bellarmine fell 1-0 to Truman State and 3-1 to Quincy on the road last weekend. Senior forward
Luke Mocherman, junior midfielder
Nathan Jones and sophomore midfielder
Magnus Bertilsson have tallied two goals each for the Knights.
"It was a real up and down weekend with our play. We did have some really good moments in both games," Chastonay said. "Physically, the game against Truman was tough. We just could not create enough high-percentage chances to go ahead a goal and that put a lot of pressure on the back line to keep it level. Ultimately a set piece cost us late in the game.
"Going up a goal on Quincy was big. The missed free kick off the post (early in the first half when Bellarmine was leading 1-0) could have really provided us some comfort. Quincy definitely became very active up front, and they were a real problem for our young back line. We made some mistakes in that back line, but they will learn and get better from that experience."
