LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University men's soccer team will face a formidable challenge to its perfect record at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium as the Knights host second-ranked Rockhurst on Friday and Drury on Sunday in Great Lakes Valley Conference competition.
The Knights (8-4-1, 6-4-1 GLVC) will welcome the undefeated Hawks (11-0-2, 10-0-1) at 6:30 p.m. (ET) Friday before squaring off with the Panthers (7-5-1, 6-4-1) at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. The match against Drury will represent Senior Day. Bellarmine is 7-0 at home this season.
Rockhurst rose from No. 4 to No. 2 in this week's national rankings. The Hawks' only non-wins were a scoreless tie against Fort Hays State in their season opener and a 1-1 deadlock at Maryville on Oct. 6. Rockhurst has won three straight matches since the stalemate with the Saints with Kaleb Jackson pacing the Hawks with seven goals and five assists. The team's stingy defense is underscored by goalkeeper Logan Feldmann's anemic 0.40 goals-against average. Despite being ranked No. 2 in the nation, Rockhurst may have a chip on its shoulder — the Hawks were rated second behind Ohio Valley (No. 11 nationally) in Wednesday's Midwest Region rankings.
"Rockhurst looks like they are very good this season. They have been to the last two NCAA Final Fours and look like they are ready to take the next step," Bellarmine Coach
Tim Chastonay said. "They are really good defensively, only giving up five goals this year, and they have guys that can score goals. (Coach) Tony's (Tocco) team has all the ingredients to challenge for a national championship. It's going to be a great test for our guys on Friday."
Considering the pedigree of the opponent, Friday's match is anticipated to be emotional regardless of the result. No matter if the Knights win, lose or draw, they will have to refocus and be prepared for a stiff challenge against Drury on Sunday. With three regular-season matches left, the Knights and Panthers are tied for sixth in the GLVC, and the top eight are awarded berths in the conference tournament. Drury is coming off an impressive weekend in which it pounded Missouri-St. Louis 4-1 and clipped McKendree 3-2. Ben Bruce has racked up seven goals while Pierre Villez has recorded seven assists for the Panthers.
"Drury was an NCAA Tournament team last year and brought back most of their team," Chastonay said. "They are a very good team on both sides of the ball. They seem to be getting hot at the right time of the season with two big wins last weekend, and they scored numerous goals. This will be a very good test for our guys on Sunday."
Nine Knights will be acknowledged before Sunday's match with Drury. The Senior Day honorees include
Ryan Fagan,
Nathan Jones,
Beau Laufer,
Sanjin Mehicic,
Luke Mocherman,
Callum Southern,
Mitchell Wiseman,
Brad Woodlee and
Joe Workman.
"As a whole, this class has loads of talent and will be missed greatly," Chastonay said. "They have been committed to the process this season and are great examples to our younger players of what we expect from a Bellarmine student-athlete. The seniors have done a good job up to this point leading us to a successful season, and I know will be working hard over the next week to extend the season."
Here's a look at the nine players who will be recognized:
Ryan Fagan: Fagan has appeared in nearly 70 games with 20 starts over his four-year career. This season, the senior midfielder and native of St. Louis assisted on the game-winning goal against Southern Indiana and scored the game-winning goal against William Jewell. He's an Academic All-GLVC selection.
"Ryan is a soft-spoken player that brings a great level of consistency each and every day," Chastonay said. "He has played a good deal of minutes over his four-year career, and you always know what to expect from him. You are going to get a player that creates chances offensively, makes dangerous runs behind the defense and defends his position well."
Nathan Jones: Jones is a three-year starter who has appeared in 55 games with 41 starts over his four-year career. The senior midfielder tied for second on the team in goals last season with four. The native of Lexington, Kentucky, has distributed two assists this season and is an Academic All-GLVC selection.
"Nathan is a great example of what we look for in a student-athlete at Bellarmine," Chastonay said. "He is committed in every aspect of our program. Nathan is a very solid attacking player and is dangerous in one-on-one situations. He has scored some big goals in his four-year career."
Beau Laufer: In 2015, Laufer earned All-Midwest Region honors after leading the team in points with 15, goals with six, game-winning goals with three and tying for the team lead in assists with three. The Louisville native and senior midfielder has come off injury to appear in six games this season.
"Beau is a very gifted player with a high level of skill," Chastonay said. "He has very good knowledge and vision on the field. Beau has spent the better part of the last three years injured and was definitely missed."
Sanjin Mehicic: Mehicic overcame an injury that took away his season last year to start every match this season. The senior defender and native of Bowling Green, Kentucky, has appeared in nearly 50 games in his career with 35 starts.
"After missing almost every game for the last two years due to injuries, Sanjin has been a steady presence along our backline this season," Chastonay said. "He does a good job starting our attack out of the back and defends his position well."
Luke Mocherman: Mocherman has appeared in over 50 games in his four-year career. Last season, the native of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, tied for second on the team in goals with four. This season the senior forward has appeared in every match with seven starts.
"Luke has improved his game every year here at Bellarmine," Chastonay said. "His commitment level to every aspect of being a Bellarmine student-athlete over the last three years can be a great example to the younger players. Luke was voted team captain by his teammates, and his leadership is outstanding."
Callum Southern: Southern is a four-year starter for Bellarmine who has played in over 60 games and scored 17 goals. This season, the native of Stoke-On-Trent, England, is leading the Knights in goals with seven and game-winning goals with three after pacing the team in goals last year. The senior midfielder and Academic All-GLVC selection recently recorded the game-winners in back-to-back victories over Illinois Springfield and Quincy.
"Callum is a very technical player and has been very consistent over his four-year career," Chastonay said. "He shows up and works hard every day and has improved each season. His senior season has been his best. He is finding the net on a more consistent basis and is carrying this group offensively."
Mitchell Wiseman: Wiseman is a four-year starter who has amassed nearly 60 starts over his career. The senior midfielder and native of Hilliard, Ohio, has made seven starts this season. He's twice exceeded 1,300 minutes of playing time in his tenure and is an Academic All-GLVC selection.
"After missing last year due to injury, Mitch has come back strong for his senior season," Chastonay said. "He has been a steady presence in the midfield this season. Mitch defends his position well and makes good decisions on the ball in possession."
Brad Woodlee: Woodlee has been a member of the Knights for the last three years. The Louisville native earned a spot on the team after impressing the coaching staff in an open tryout. He's a member of a defense that allowed one goal or less in 10 matches.
"Brad is a player we selected at open tryouts for students, and he improved each and every season," Chastonay said. "He has been committed each year to improving his game and helping the team improve. Brad is a great example to our younger players."
Joe Workman: Workman has appeared in over 60 matches over his four-year career. This season, the Taylorsville, Kentucky, native is tied for second on the team in goals with three. The senior forward was honored as the GLVC Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 4 after assisting on the game-winning goal against Cedarville and scoring the game-winner against Davenport.
"Joe is a very gifted technical player," Chastonay said. "He's been called upon to play a variety of roles and positions during his four years. His play up front this season got our team off to a great start. Joe has the ability to distribute the ball out of the midfield, hold the ball up front and can score goals."
