LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The big question entering the 2017 season for the Bellarmine University men's soccer team is: where are the goals going to come from?
In the Knights' first competitive action of the year, the answer was: from everywhere.
Five different players scored first-half goals for Bellarmine as the Knights rolled to a 5-1 victory over Spalding in a Friday exhibition at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
Senior forward
Luke Mocherman, freshman midfielder
Greg Fischer, senior midfielder
Callum Southern, senior midfielder
Ryan Fagan and freshman midfielder
Micah Linscott all located the net before halftime against the DIII Golden Eagles, who are the preseason favorite to win the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Southern added an assist and freshman defender
Eddie Williamson tallied two helpers.
In the 13th minute, Southern redirected a deflection toward the goal, where Mocherman was waiting for the tap-in. Four minutes later, Fischer ripped a shot from deep on the left wing that landed inside the far post for a 2-0 lead.
Southern made it 3-0 in the 19th minute when he outran the defense to a long pass from Williamson and beat the goalkeeper. Williamson found Fagan in the 40th minute for a 4-0 lead and, from the left side of the box in the 44th minute, Linscott cut hard to the right and fired in Bellarmine's fifth goal from around 18 yards out.
The Knights didn't score in the second half, but they created plenty of chances and finished with a 27-6 advantage in shots. Bellarmine had a 14-2 superiority in shots on goal.
Spalding's Almir Hodzic scored in the 57th minute off a rebound after Knights freshman goalkeeper
Andrew Hagan made a tremendous diving save to bat away a shot.
Bellarmine Coach
Tim Chastonay heavily substituted as 21 Knights amassed over 20 minutes of playing time.
Bellarmine opens the regular season by hosting Cedarville at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.
