OAKLAND CITY, Ind. — The Bellarmine University men's tennis team made a triumphant debut in the fall season and, in turn, the Knights made sure
Tyler Worley had plenty to celebrate in his head-coaching debut.
On Saturday at Oakland City, visiting Bellarmine won two of three doubles matches and five of six singles contests in defeating the Mighty Oaks 7-2.
The victories were spread out for Bellarmine. Senior
Matthew Momper (No. 2 singles, No. 2 doubles) collected two wins for the Knights (1-0) while junior
Lauren de Boeck (No. 2 doubles), senior
Alex Swords (No. 3 doubles), sophomore
Andrew Jones (No. 3 doubles), freshman
Sam Rueff (No. 3 singles), freshman
Nick Johnson (No. 4 singles), freshman
Robert Naville (No. 5 singles) and junior
L.J. Allara (No. 6 singles) all claimed one victory.
"It's always great to get our first win on the board," Worley said. "I'm very happy that three of our freshmen had a win today on what is always a nervous first college match. I'm extremely proud of Sam and Nick for bouncing back in singles after facing a tough opponent at No. 1 doubles."
Bellarmine dominated the matches it won. The Knights dropped only two games total at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles and tore through Nos. 2-6 singles in straight sets, never dropping more than three games in any frame.
