LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University men's soccer team will complete a lengthy road swing this week in Great Lakes Valley Conference play by heading to Wisconsin-Parkside and Lewis.
At 3:30 p.m. (ET) Friday, the Knights (5-2, 3-2 GLVC) play at Wisconsin-Parkside (2-6, 2-4) before shifting to Lewis (5-3, 4-2) for a 3:30 p.m. contest Sunday.
Wisconsin-Parkside split in last week's conference play, defeating McKendree 3-1 before falling 2-0 at Southern Indiana. The Rangers also boast an impressive 2-1 victory over Maryville and were edged 1-0 by both conference leader and sixth-ranked Rockhurst and Drury. All three are in the upper echelon of the GLVC standings.
As a component of sanctions levied by the GLVC, the Rangers are ineligible for the GLVC Tournament. Wisconsin-Parkside is joining the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 2018-19.
"UWP looks to be playing good soccer; they seem to be finding themselves at this point," Bellarmine Coach
Tim Chastonay said. "They have good wins against Maryville and McKendree over the last two weeks. UWP is always a tough place to play on the road, and we have not been very successful against them in the past."
Lewis has won four of its last five matches, including a sweep of Missouri-St. Louis (2-1) and McKendree (1-0) in last week's action. Nico Mueller has tallied four goals and two assists and John Horstman three goals and two assists for the Flyers.
"Lewis is really coming on strong at this point," Chastonay said. "They have always been one of the best programs in the GLVC, and (Coach) Evan (Fiffles) looks to have a team that can compete for a top four spot this year. They are always very good defensively and are physically very strong."
Bellarmine was off last Friday and dropped a 1-0 decision at Indianapolis on Sunday. The Knights have dropped their two road contests this season, with a common denominator being a goal allowed inside the first 10 minutes of each setback. Bellarmine's two shutouts offensively this season came in those road outings. Those are trends the Knights are looking to reverse as they play their second and third straight road matches.
"It was definitely disappointing to go on the road again and concede an early goal," Chastonay said of the UIndy game. "We felt we had a great chance of getting a result if we could keep the game level early. With UIndy playing a tight game (against Southern Indiana) on Friday, we felt we could win late as they fatigued. We did create a few very good chances, but our composure in front of the net was not good. As the coach, I have to find the right group to start games on the road. It's very tough on the road in the GLVC, and I need to put us in position to start games better."
