LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Playing its first pair of home games, the Bellarmine University men's soccer team took a major step in the right direction. Now the Knights will look to get on a serious roll.
After opening the season with seven straight road games, Bellarmine will host its third and fourth matches in a row as the Knights (4-4-1, 3-2-1 GLVC) welcome Lewis (2-5-3, 1-4-1) for a 6:30 p.m. (ET) contest Friday before hosting Rockhurst (3-4-2, 2-2-2) at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
Bellarmine rallied from two separate deficits to defeat Quincy 3-2 on Friday, with junior forward
Tomas Bernedo and sophomore defender
Jonas Skulstad both driving in headers off corner kicks inside the final 8 minutes in the stirring win. Sunday's contest was more reserved overall, but the Knights still managed a goal in each half in a 2-0 victory over Illinois Springfield.
"It was good to play at home this past weekend. The Family Weekend atmosphere was great, and it was big for our group to get two wins," Bellarmine Coach
Tim Chastonay said. "We had long stretches of good play against Quincy but found ourselves behind two times. It was good to see our fight all the way to the end, which ultimately helped us find a couple of late goals.
"Sunday games are always tough because of the short rest and how good the teams are in the GLVC. We played a great first half but missed too many chances. The goal at the end of the first half (by sophomore defender
Eddie Williamson with 17 seconds left) was a big lift for the team. UIS made great changes in the second half and had the better of the play. (Freshman goalkeeper) Connor (Range) made some big saves and kept us in the game."
Seven of Bellarmine's 13 goals this season have come over its last five halves. Sophomore midfielder
Micah Linscott has accounted for five goals and Bernedo for three. An encouraging sign last weekend was that Bellarmine scored three goals over two matches on set pieces, but the Knights feel there's still plenty of potential left to be tapped into in all phases.
"We still have not reached the level we are expecting in the attacking third. We scored some goals lately, but we've found some different ways to score," Chastonay said. "Defensively, we continue to have bad moments as well. We are definitely still a work in progress — searching for the right combinations."
Lewis is coming off a solid weekend in which it defeated Missouri-St. Louis 2-1 following a tight 2-1 overtime loss to current No. 12 Indianapolis. Devon Amoo-Mensah is pacing the Flyers with three goals.
"Lewis is very well coached and has a great soccer history," Chastonay said. "They are coming off a big year least year (10-3-1 in the GLVC) and have been a little like us this year. They have been up and down with some of their results. They play very good soccer, and I'm expecting this to be a very good game on Friday."
Rockhurst won the NCAA Midwest Region title last season and advanced to the Final Four. The Hawks are coming off a pair of road losses — 1-0 to Maryville and 3-2 to Missouri S&T. Four different players have scored two goals for Rockhurst.
"Rockhurst on Sunday will be another very tough game," Chastonay said. "They are always one of the best teams in the league. They play great soccer and are so tough physically. Getting them on a Sunday is not ideal for our young team."
