LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University women's tennis team remained undefeated with a 7-2 victory over Georgetown College on Saturday at the Eddie Weber Tennis Complex.
Junior
Maggie Walroth (No. 1 singles/No. 1 doubles), sophomore
Ashley Jonathan (No. 2 singles/No. 1 doubles) and freshman
Ava Ratcliff (No. 4 singles/No. 2 doubles) collected two wins apiece for the Knights (8-0), while freshman
Aubrey Smith (No. 5 singles), senior
Bess Fley (No. 6 singles) and sophomore
Jennifer Skonieczny (No. 2 doubles) tallied one victory each against Georgetown (0-3).
"The final score does not indicate how close the match was," Bellarmine Coach
John Mican said. "Georgetown put up a great fight."
Bellarmine led 2-1 after the doubles matches as Walroth/Jonathan and Skonieczny/Ratcliff secured victories at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles. Walroth and Jonathan put the Knights on the cusp of the team win after straight-sets triumphs at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, and Ratcliff clinched the victory with her straight-sets win at No. 4.
Smith won a super tiebreaker at No. 5 singles to add another victory to Bellarmine's total, and Fley polished off the match with a straight-sets triumph at No. 6.
"Bess stepped up her game after the first three games to take control," Mican said. "That's eight straight wins for Ava. Maggie and Ashley found their form in doubles again, and Aubrey came up big in the superbreaker. Jennifer was spectacular in doubles."
